Touring the first green re-modeled building in Northern Nevada is how the interview for this month’s provider profile began. This lovely building is home to the Gerber Medical Clinic, one of Reno’s foremost integrative, alternative medicine clinics. Dr. Michael Gerber, MD, HMD, is founder and owner.
Dr. Gerber has practiced medicine for 36 years, graduating from Kansas University School of Medicine in 1972. He took his Internal Medicine Internship at Oakland County Hospital. He completed additional postgraduate training in Zaire, Africa and at the University of California, San Francisco Medical School in a psychiatric externship at the crisis intervention ward; he conducted psychopharmacological research at the Stanford Research ward of the VA Hospitals in Palo Alto, CA and in Menlo Park.
Natural approaches to medicine have always been of vital interest to Dr. Gerber. Early in his career he studied with 3 well-known medical pioneers: herbalist Dr. John Christopher, nutritionist Dr. Paavo Airola, and two-time Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Linus Pauling. Since 1976 Dr. Gerber has been a chelating physician and Diplomat of the American Board of Chelation Therapy since 1984. He is a Diplomat of the
International College of Anti-Aging Medicine and is a graduate of the UCLA Medical Acupuncture Training Program. He is President of the Nevada Homeopathic and Integrative Medical Association, a Past President of the Orthomolecular Medical Association. Dr. Gerber was also a medical advisor and featured
columnist for Alternative Medicine Magazine.
In 1985 the Gerber Medical Clinic (GMC) opened in Reno. In 2007 the clinic opened its doors on Westfield Avenue. The clinic has grown from 2,100 sf to 8,800 sf and includes a test kitchen for creating healthy seasonal menus, as well as a movement studio. Staff has grown from 3 to 20 people.
Many new therapeutic modalities have been added, including medical acupuncture, German isopathic remedies, oxidative therapies, neural therapy, breast thermography imaging, laser energetic
detoxification, far infrared sauna detoxification, several new lines of German herbal tinctures, a complete homeopathic pharmacy and marketplace, allergy therapy, movement therapy, medical aesthetics, lymphatic therapy and cranial sacral therapy. A serious yoga enthusiast himself, Dr. Gerber offers martial arts, meditation, pilates, tai chi and yoga as an integral part of holistic treatment.
Medicine is Dr. Gerber’s passion as well as his business, meaning that he spends much of his free time attending medical conferences and meetings. This keeps him at the leading edge of the healing community. Utilizing amino acids as an alternative to prescription anti-depression drugs is one of his current research interests. Helping others find a strong path to wellness has been Dr. Gerber’s great desire throughout his long career in natural and alternative medicines.
The diagnostic techniques that Dr. Gerber uses for patient assessment include a traditional medical exam, Chinese medicine diagnosis and German electrodermal screening. In-depth discussion with patients about their individual needs and concerns is also a major component of this assessment.
Yoga and music are also among Dr. Gerber’s passions. He and his wife, Inge participate in an intensive week-long yoga retreat every year and are committed to a daily yoga practice. Musically, Dr. Gerber is a proud member of the Nevada Opera company and was recently inducted into the Kansas City Music Hall of Fame for his collegiate ”traveling band” activities.
Last but most important, spending quality time with his wife and four sons is Dr. Gerber’s ongoing passion, as those who know him will confirm.
