5 all-natural beauty products Reno-Tahoe wellness experts love

Skin is the largest organ of the body. It’s our first line of defense against illness and disease. It’s also a passageway to our bloodstream.

And with environmental toxins, harmful bacteria, viruses, pathogens, and UV radiation constantly bombarding it, it’s important to be mindful of the skin’s health — and what you’re putting directly on it during your hygiene and beauty routine.

“Anything you want to put on your skin you want to be able to consume as well,” said Melinda Choy, an acupuncturist and owner of the holistic health center Elevate Wellness in South Lake Tahoe. “Just as much as you want to eat organic food, you want to put organic products on your skin.”

This month, Healthy Beginnings spoke with five regional professionals, including Choy, in the health, beauty and wellness sector to find out what all-natural products they love to use.

“One of my newfound favorites is the Palmarosa and Aloe Facial Cleanser by Earth Tu Face. The line is small batch and developed by two herbalists in California. A lot of their herbs are wild crafted and their products have no preservatives. It’s one of those cleansers where I get excited to wash my face. I love the infusion of the oils and the herbs — it doesn’t dry you out and leaves your face so soft.”

“An all-natural product that I love to use every day is the Dry Shampoo from Pantry Products that is made locally here in Reno. I use the raven color (brown) in the mornings and at night in between washing my hair to soak up the oil that my hair produces naturally. It’s the best dry shampoo I have ever used, and I love it because it leaves your hair smelling like chocolate from the cacao.”

“Right now my favorite all natural product is Eminence Organic’s Mangosteen Daily Resurfacing Cleanser. The Lactic Acid Complex and mangosteen work together to lightly slough off dead skin cells and create a smooth, radiant complexion. It leaves your skin soft and smooth and smells like the perfect summer fruit.”

Tim Cruse | Personal trainer and owner of BeStrong Fitness in Reno

“Arbonne RE9 Advanced for Men Micro-Exfoliating Cleanser is by far my favorite. It is an all-natural, plant-based exfoliation/face wash that really does work! I love this product because it does not leave your skin feeling dry or oily (as many products do). It also is an all-natural product so I can be sure that no harmful chemicals or toxicants are being absorbed transdermally into my body and blood stream. I have never been a fan of many face washes or lotions, but this stuff is awesome.”

Elizabeth Grimm | Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach in Reno

“My favorite beauty product is the Hydrating Cream Hairbath from Innersense Organic Beauty. I found out about Innersense when I was researching the toxicity of ingredients in my beauty products. I used the Environmental Working Group (ewg.org) to investigate what I was using and to find safer alternatives. The shampoo in combination with their whole hair care line has worked great for my long hair and smells really good, too!”
