HEALTHY TRAVELWhite Water Rafting in CaliforniaWritten by Lauren Birtwhistle The sun is out and the water is fast! Take advantage of this fun and exciting time of year and experience a one of a kind adventure: white water rafting. You do not have to travel too far for an adrenaline-pumping weekend. Here are a few places to check out around nearby California.
South Fork of the America River: This section of the American river is located in Coloma, CA in El Dorado County. This is a mellow route and is perfect for beginners, but popular for white water veterans. You can choose to take the half-, full- or two-day trip, all of which promise amazing views and some thrilling rapids. Middle Fork of the American River: This route is a great alternative to the sometimes crowded South Fork area. It is located in nearby Auburn, CA in Placer County and is the perfect trip for a more fit and active person. Like the South Fork trip, you can choose the length of time you want to take. This section can be traveled in 1-3 days. It flows through steep, rugged canyons within the Tahoe National Forest into the Auburn State Recreation Area. One of the benefits of choosing a 2 or 3 day trip is having the chance to enjoy the beauty of this river in a more leisurely way. Between the 17-23 miles from Greenwood Bridge to Mammoth Bar, there is a wonderful hike up the American Canyon to some incredible waterfalls. Lower Klamath River: If you are looking for the perfect family weekend, this may be it. This route begins in Happy Camp, CA and you may take 2 or 3 days for the trip. Another smooth route, you traverse through a series of small mountain ranges named the Siskiyous, Salmon, Marble Mountains, Scott Bar Mountains and the Trinity Alps, collectively known as the Klamath Mountains. Thirty-five miles before it reaches the Pacific Ocean, the Klamath turns to the northwest and cuts through the Pacific Coast Range, one of only three rivers on the west coast that does so. With fun rapids such as Rattlesnake and Dragon's Tooth, plus large sandy beaches for camping and play, this is an ideal multi-day trip for families and first timers. Don't forget that Tahoe and Truckee are home to some great white water routes. You do not have to travel far to experience the exhilarating rush that rafting offers.
