ABOUT US
Dawn Gowery, Publisher/EditorPublisher/editor and founder Dawn Gowery is the creative visionary and driving force of Healthy Beginnings (HB), it’s a Lifestyle Magazine and website, www.HBmag.com. Healthy Beginnings has become the community hub for all things natural, organic and healthy. Articles cover all aspects of natural health and wellbeing – nutrition, fitness, families, pets, the environment, green building and sustainability, corporate responsibility and accountability, local agriculture and cooperative community efforts. Healthy Beginnings magazine and website is the culmination of Dawn’s creative vision and long-time dedication to finding natural alternatives and organic solutions for living. She is committed to sharing this information with others so that they have choices to make educated decisions. Each person can then feel empowered to take ownership of their own health! In the magazine, Dawn combines her passion for natural health with her highly successful marketing and sales skills. The result is a unique venue for people who want local, timely, fact-based and educational information about natural health and living, and for advertisers who want to reach this audience. Dawn has been successful in all facets of corporate and personal direct sales -- from Fortune 500 Directory publishing, advertising sales and marketing, to large event (trade show) conception, planning and execution, to on-air sales at TV’s Home Shopping Network. From these experiences, Dawn developed a unique capacity to concretize abstract marketing ideas and breathe life into them with a clear call to action. This skill, paired with her intelligence, drive and discipline makes Dawn a highly effective business visionary, entrepreneur and publisher. Dawn hails from a military family with roots in ranching and education, people who respected the land, other people and their innumerable differences. She was born in Los Angeles and grew up in a military family; she was a hiker and naturalist, even as a child. She has traveled extensively in the US and Germany, living for longer periods in Rapid City, South Dakota, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Southwest Florida. Her undergraduate degree is in Communications from the University of Texas. She is a mother of 4 children, and a grandmother of 3, with a 4th on the way. She loves nature and the outdoors, and believes deeply in living by the golden rule, having fun and facing life with a laugh and a smile. She has this to say about health: “In a perfect world, doctors would be our partners, helping us to investigate the cause of our health concerns, then prescribing nutrition, exercise, supplements and/or as a last resort, medicines or surgery. Our bodies are designed to heal themselves. It is up to each of us to keep our bodies running in tip-top shape. Knowledge is power and unbiased information is key to us as individuals -- empowering us to make quality, life-sustaining choices.”
Carol Bucher, Content EditorFighting through the flood of information available in today’s world is not something that most people find easy or pleasant. Finding accurate, timely information is even more daunting, especially in the areas of health and natural living. The baseball metaphor describes it pretty well -- one mostly encounters material that is either too far out in left field or too far in right. Both can be close ambiguous and misleading -- or worse, simply untrue. As content editor of Healthy Beginnings Magazine, Carole works with local, national and international contributors to bring HB readers relevant and factual material that is also useful, interesting, reliable and eye-opening. One of Healthy Beginnings’ main objectives is to present information that will help readers participate in their own health and life choices; i.e., collaborating with health care providers and advisors, rather than abdicating personal rights and responsibilities. Each month the final magazine content is determined by an alchemical process between Publisher and Editor, who are equally dedicated to elucidating options for natural health and living, realizing that there is no cookie cutter prescription for our individual health. Carole relocated to Reno in 2006 from San Francisco where she lived and worked for centuries. There she became acquainted with local cultural and healing practices, among these, traditional Chinese medicine, Asian energy and movement arts, the Feldenkrais® Method, a variety of chiropractic and body therapies, as well as cutting edge and sometimes quirky innovations that arise in major metro areas. Her most influential job was at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, in the Physiology Department, where for 9 yrs she was the admin to the Chairman and assisted in the preparation of medical student lectures and scientific research papers. During the last 10 yrs Carole worked as a freelance pharmaceutical and medical editor and writer in the SF Bay Area, preparing clinical study reports for submittal to the FDA and research papers to major medical journals. She has extensive fact-checking capability and Internet research experience in a wide range of disciplines. Coming from a military family, Carole lived and traveled on 3 continents and was exposed to an array of cultural influences. This experience developed in her a strong interest in diversity, philosophy, folk medicine/herbs, natural and alternative health. She has spent much of her adult life independently studying nutritional healing and fitness. Carole graduated from San Francisco State University in 2001 with a BA Degree in Social & Cultural Anthropology and a minor in Life Sciences. She is also an advanced, certified ESL teacher; she loves animals and nature and is very happy to be in Reno, near the Great Basin and the mountains, enjoying 4 seasons.
